Nigeria

It is a joyful thing to experience freedom. It is an earnest desire to be free from those things which weigh us down or restrict us. Every living thing craves to be free, this is one reason acorns and nuts break open and life sprouts out of them growing towards the direction of the sun. This is one reason cubs, calf, kittens and joeys leave their mothers at a certain age to start life somewhere else. Once given freedom, a creature would make decisions that either makes or mar their lives in the long run. Humans aren’t an exception to this law.

It is a noble thing to declare independence. It is even more venerable to be independent. It is however ignoble after having made a declaration of independence to be in dependence. Human needs and wants are insatiable and with an ever growing population, it becomes even more difficult to meet the needs of the people. After 60 years of its declaration of independence, Nigeria still relies heavily on foreign inputs to feed its citizens. It is an irony that the nation which is the highest producer of yam in the world, a poor man cannot afford a tuber of yam. Independence connotes the attainment of an autarchy — a national economic independence, but we are still a long way from achieving this. What then is the way forward?

Nigeria is endowed with youthfulness, a very high percentage of the over 200 million citizens of the most populous black nation on Earth are young people. This is an added advantage as our population can be maximized for greater productivity. The way out of an economic and financial quagmire is sustainability. Sustainability in every spheres viz. environment, economy, infrastructure, health, food, water and every essentials of life. We are also endowed with natural resources and our exploration and exploitation of these resources should be geared towards sustainability. The Global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) should also be our focus — all of them.

At Step-Up Green Climate Warriors Initiative, without much ado, we are utilizing these opportunities by investing in the youths and other youngsters. We believe that for us to really move forward as a Nation, we need to pull everyone upward and take them along. We believe that a sustainable society is the future and we are putting in efforts to achieving this global goal. We teach, train, nurture and encourage youngsters to be better citizens, contributing positively towards national development and environmental resource conservation. We are positive that a sustainable society is attainable and we are contributing towards that in our own little way.

The way forward is sustainability, resilience, build back better and taking responsibility.
