International Youth Day 2020: Youth Engagement for Global Climate Action
The International Youth Day is a day set aside by the United Nations General Assembly endorsing a 1998 recommendation to enact and declare the 12th day of August as International Youth Day. This day commemorates youthfulness and it is an opportunity for the voices of the youth to be heard as well as their meaningful actions and engagements in the society seen.
The theme for this year’s International Youth Day is “Youth Engagement for Global Action”. It is designed to enhance or pronounce the importance of youth participation in the economic, political and social lives of their society at all levels. Evidently, the engagements of youth in local, national and global issues cannot be overemphasized.
An engagement of youth for global climate action is a timely intervention, for we are presently faced with a Global Climatic Problem. Global warming being at the top of the list poses a serious threat to the future of today’s youth. The youth is known to be vibrant, strong, adventurous and outspoken, and these beautiful and unique attributes of theirs becomes enhanced when they are actively engaged in #GlobalClimateAction.
In accordance with the 2020 International Youth Day focus, the engagement of youth in climate action at the local or community level, national level and global level would have far reaching effects. Everyone one belongs to a community and there’s the popular saying that ‘charity begins at home’. When youth begins climate action at home which is their local community, they can proceed to the national level — here they can influence the formation of laws, policies and their implementation. When youths around the globe take action in their local communities in this way, the results would be tremendous.
As Climate Warriors, we encourage youths to join in the fight against climate crisis, global warming, plastic pollution, desertification, food insecurity, flooding and hunger. There is no Planet B and the Earth is what we all have in Common. Let the Youth take Action and get engaged in a Global Climate Action. The youth are in line to take on the mantle of leadership, let us secure our future. We can do something about the climate crisis. It is our responsibility to #ActNow or Never. Let the World’s Youth speak out!!
